     Plants To Plates
           1st Grade Web Quest

Introduction
   Mmmmm! Was that a root, stem, leaf, flower, seed or fruit I just ate for lunch?
   Many of the things we eat are made up of plants or parts of plants. During this quest it will be your job to find out three main things plants need to grow, the names of different plant parts, which parts of plants we eat and which plant we eat ALL of.
The Task
   After Mrs. M has read the books, Tops and Bottoms, and Pumpkin, Pumpkin, you will begin your quest. Work with your partner to research, record and complete the following:
       -play the "Salad Game"
       -record the six main parts of a plant
       -correctly label plant parts
       -go to the proper internet site and
        print out "Plant Parts Shopping List"
       -classify plants by their edible parts
       -research the 3 main things plants
        need to grow
       -draw, name, and color your own plant,
        label its parts, and list 3 things it will
        need to grow.

Process
With your partner visit "Sprout" at the following web site. Play the Salad Game and find out what the six main parts of a plant are. Record them in Section A of Worksheet 1. In section B of Worksheet 1 label the parts of the plant.

After listening to the story, The Surprise Garden, read by your teacher, go to the following web site and print out a copy of the "Plant Parts Shopping List" one for you and one for your partner. Save in your journal.

With your partner review your "Plant Parts Shopping List". Go to worksheet 2 in your journal. List 2 plants in each plant parts box according to the part we eat.

Final Task: Complete Worksheet 3 in your journal. Draw, color and name your own plant. Label it's parts. Name the part of your plant that people will enjoy eating.

BONUS: Did you discover which plant we can eat whole? Shhh! It's a secret! If you know the answer write it on the back of Worksheet 2.
