Hughie
Lee-Smith was born in Eustis, Florida.When his parents separated he moved
with his mom to Cleveland. Hughie Lee-Smith attended East Technical High
School whose his teachers names were Howard Hunsicker, Paul Scherer and
Howard Reid.
In his
senior year 1934 Hughie won a National Scholastics Art Competition Scholarship
for one year of study at Detroit Society of arts and crafts. In 1935, he
won Karamus second Gilpin Players Scholarship. His new teachers'
names were Henry O.Keller, Rolf Stoll , and Carl Gaertner.Hughie had two
friends their names were Joseph O' Sickey and Anthony Eterovich.
He graduated
in 1938, gathering his art in Karamu. He spent academic year 1939-40 in
Orangeburg, South Carolina.
Hughie
Lee-Smith died in the year 2000. He was a great artist. |
